Variety Seniors Club meets Wednesdays
On Wednesdays, there’s the Variety Seniors Club at Farring-Baybrook Recreation Center, 4501 Farring Court, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Program for ages 50 and up with disabilities who live in the community. The club meets throughout the fall and winter months for table games, arts and crafts and special informative programs related to senior issues and day trips. Limited transportation on a first-come, first-served basis is available for Baltimore residents. The cost is $1 per week. Info: 410-396-1550.

Friday afternoon bingo, 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Cost $2 for six cards (extra cards available-3 for 25 cents), 20 plus games of bingo.

New class now forming: “Mind-ercise.” Monday and Friday mornings 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Keep your mind in shape as we exercise our memories. This activity is free to members.

Want to lose weight, firm up, have more energy and feel better? John Booth’s members and staff are invited to join the Spring Fitness Contest, which runs from April 9-May 31. The program kicks off on Thursday, April 5, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Equipment includes a treadmill, stationary bicycle and Cardioglide, all at the senior center. Prizes will be awarded for the most time logged on the equipment and in Laura’s Easy Cardio and Balance and Wellness Classes. Weighing-in is optional and will not be made public. All exercise must be done at the center in order to be counted for the contest.

April 4: Center Easter Party and Easter Bonnet Parade. Cost: $3 members; $5 non-members, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Music by Gary Diamond.

April 5: Red Hat Peppers to the Speakeasy, 3:30 p.m.

April 6: John Booth Senior Center closed.

April 9: Congressman John Sarbanes Outreach at John Booth, noon-1 p.m.

April 11: Coach Bus Trip to Midway. $20 members; $24 non-members. Still a few seats left.

April 17: Special vocal performance by The Larks, 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Listen to them rehearse. 11 a.m.-noon Enjoy listening to The Larks in concert. Presented in conjunction with the Eating Together in Baltimore Program. Lunch at noon. Please sign up for Eating Together lunch by April 10.

April 19: Union Memorial Hospitalís presentation on Leg Pain. This is the third in our Series “Lunch and Learn.” Bring your own lunch or sign up by April 12 for Eating Together Lunch.

April 26: High Tea at the Conservatory with the Senior Division of Recreation and Parks. This is a red hat event. Reservations must be made by April 5.

Thursday, April 5: Video exercise at 9:30 a.m., aerobics at 10:30, lunch at 11:30. The 12:30 p.m. movie is “Mother Teresa” starring Olivia Hussey.

Friday, April 6: the center is closed for Good Friday.

Monday, April 9: Video exercise at 9:30 a.m., taxes by appointment beginning at 10 a.m., massage by appointment also at 10, cards at 10:30, and Eating Together at 11:30.

Tuesday, April 10: lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., computer classes are held from noon until 3 p.m., and yoga classes are held from 4:45 to 9 p.m.

Wednesday April 11: Health and Fitness begins at 10 a.m. The topic is Dementia Awareness. Lunch is served at 11:30, art class starts at noon, and CPR class begins at 12:30 p.m.

Sign up now for the hometown tour on May 16 with the first stop the American Visionary Art Museum; then McCormick and Schmick for lunch; and finally it’s off to the new local hot glass center for a hands-on glass blowing workshop.

Senior Friendly Fridays are normally scheduled from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sign up in advance for activities like lunch.

The goal is to provide events that offer physical, mental and spiritual occasions for enjoyment in a safe and comfortable environment.

The staff is always interested in classes and programs seniors would like to attend.

Special events begin at 12:30 p.m. The Children’s Hour, an opportunity to work with and enjoy children, begins 3 p.m.

Classes in crafts, including flower arranging, drawing and painting, are held Thursdays, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Virginia S. Baker Recreation Center in Patterson Park, 2601 E. Baltimore Street. Cost is $5 per person per class, and classes will be taught by Suzanne Evans. Register by calling 410-522-5010.
