Port to Fort takes on a home-improvement theme

Now that the weather’s warming up, it’s time for two things: getting outdoors and doing home improvement work.

And those are just the two things the organizers of the 11th Annual Port-to-Fort 6K Run and Walk are counting on to make their event go.

The Port-to-Fort, which takes place on Sunday, April 22 at 9 a.m., runs from the waterfront Baltimore Museum of Industry to, yes, Fort McHenry and back again, and benefits the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation. And it’s sponsored by Home Depot, which is seeing a spike in activity this time of year as homeowners everywhere give in to the urge to spruce up their property.

That kind of sponsorship means those who bring their competitive spirit along with their running shoes will have the chance to win Home Depot gift cards for top placement.
In addition, said Linday Thomas, special events coordinator for Believe In Tomorrow, there are fundraising challenges.

“We have three different team challenges: corporate, military and community.”
Corporate teams are those entered by members under one company banner. Military teams are those populated by members of various branches of the military (Thomas said that Fort Meade, for example, is always well-represented). Community teams are organized by community and neighborhood organizations. Corporate and community team members are also able to get pledges for their efforts, which also benefit Believe In Tomorrow.

“We reward the largest team from all three categories,” said Thomas, “and we also recognize the corporate and community teams that fund raise the most money.”

The event also has raffles, door prizes and other give-aways that will be awarded after the race has concluded, during a party held back at the BMI grounds. (Food will include hot dogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and more).

Prior to race day, cost for registration is $20 for general public, $10 for students, Home Depot employees and active military personnel, and $25 per person on the day of the race, with registration starting at 7:30 a.m.

More information about the race can be obtained at www.believeintomorrow.org. Online registration is available at www.active.com. To receive a brochure on the event, call 410-744-4103.
