Southern District police receive recognition

The Southern District Police Community Relations Council recognized its most recent Officer of the month, Officer Imtiaz Alli.

Alli has been a member of the department since September of 2004. He is assigned to the Southern District Cherry Hill Crime Reduction Team. Additionally, he and his unit are deployed to locations in the district experiencing spikes in violent crime.

During the time frame from April 19-May 17, Alli worked a total of 16 days and during that time, made six felony narcotics arrests, nine misdemeanor narcotics arrests, served three felony warrants and six misdemeanor warrants, and made two additional arrests.

Alli also recovered three handguns during the course of narcotic investigations. Of the three felony warrants Officer Alli served, two were suspects wanted for murder. The first suspect was wanted for shooting two people, one of whom died. The second suspect was wanted for a murder that occurred in Cherry Hill in 2006.

Three Southern District detectives have also been awarded the departmental  “Lifesaving Award.”

Detectives Shawn Reichenberg, David McDermott and Ryan Guinn are assigned to the Southern District Detective Unit investigating non-fatal shootings. In February, the three detectives were driving across the Hanover Street bridge when they saw a woman climbing over the guard rail.

They made a u-turn on the bridge, left their car and tried to keep the woman from jumping. The woman jumped, but the detectives held onto her, prevented her from falling and pulled her to safety. Investigation revealed that the woman had taken an overdose of sleeping pills, crashed her car into the bridge and left a suicide note. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Police Commissioner reviewed the circumstances and awarded Detectives Reichenberg, McDermott and Guinn the Baltimore Police Department’s “Lifesaving Award” for their actions.
