Old Bike? Got an old bike that isn’t getting use? Want to refurbish one and bring it up to speed? The Velocipede Bike Project takes in old bikes and refurbishes them for new use. It also teaches individuals how to do tune-ups and maintenance. The shop is located at 4 W. Lanvale Street, and is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 6 p.m.-10 p.m., Sundays 2 p.m.-6 p.m. (but on that day only for building up shop bikes worth <$40, no repairs). Make Prom Possible: The Priceless Gown Project provides free prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who cannot otherwise afford them. The project is seeking clean, new and nearly new gowns (2002 and newer) as well as accessories, such as costume jewelry, wraps, etc. Monetary donations and donations of services are also appreciated. Shelter A Pet: Want to pet-sit for the animal of a soldier who is about to be deployed? Two organizations make it possible for civilians to act as foster homes for cats, dogs, birds, fish and more. Homeowners: A warning for homeowners who will repair and remodel their homes this summer: The Maryland Home Improvement Commission warns homeowners to use only licensed home improvement contractors to protect themselves from shoddy, incompetent construction and substantial loss caused by using unlicensed contractors. Report any unlawful practices by calling the Commission at 1-888-218-5925.

Cross Roads: Celebrate Recovery meets Fridays from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at Streetlite Christian Fellowship, 1121 Riverside Ave. Cross Roads is a new ministry of Streetlite designed to recover from alcohol or drug addiction. Double-Knit Needed: Have some double-knit fabric or clothing and want to donate it? The Quilters of St. Luke’s can use it to make quilts for the needy. Also needed are regular washable fabric (sheets are nice) for the quilt backing, and yarn to tie the sewn blocks together. All donations are welcomed by the women. Hook, Line and Sinker: The free DPW Pocket Guide to Boating and Fishing in City Reservoirs is now available. Boat fishing season opens March 1 at Liberty and Prettyboy reservoirs, and April 6 at Loch Raven. Boating season runs March 1-Dec. 31 at Liberty and Prettyboy reservoirs, and April 6-Nov. 25 at Loch Raven, which has a limited schedule after Labor Day. Family History: Researching the family tree? The Baltimore County Genealogical Society has compiled the interment records from 1892-2002 at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, at one time Baltimore’s premier cemetery for immigrants and their families, and still in active use today. Over 18,000 individual records, including names, addresses, children, spouses, families and other information that provides excellent resources for genealogy research. Food Needed: The Center for Poverty Solutions, which provides bags of food for people who need emergency assistance, needs donations of nonperishable food items. Many of the clients are homeless and do not have cooking facilities or refrigerators, so the following items are especially welcome: peanut butter, soup, tuna fish, dry or canned milk, fruits and vegetables, canned meats, crackers and pasta. No glass jars. Bring donations to the center, 2521 N. Charles St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Facing Foreclosure? Baltimore City homeowners facing the threat of foreclosure can now call 311, where city operators will connect them to legitimate resources including the St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center in Baltimore, which has helped others keep their homes when they might otherwise have become the victims of property flippers. (Homeowners who live outside Baltimore City can call the hotline directly: 1-888-995-HOPE.)

Health Screenings: Harbor Hospital is offering eligible women free screenings, including mammograms, breast exams and Pap tests. Patients must be women age 40-64, Baltimore City residents, underinsured or uninsured and live on a limited income. Info: 410-350-2001.

Suddenly Single: Friends of Mercy, a support group which helps people adjust to the crisis of being separated, widowed or divorced—”single again,” holds activities including motivational speakers, monthly meetings, discussion groups, social and spiritual gatherings. Lock the Door: Police detectives are reminding residents to lock their homes (doors and windows), even if they’re only going out to walk the dog, go jogging or run next door to visit a neighbor. There have been multiple burglaries and home invasions in cases where the person has been gone only a few minutes, and even while the person was still at home. Take a moment to make sure car doors stay locked as well. Even in daylight, crime happens. And if you find you’ve been a victim, call 911 immediately.

Make-A-Wish: The Make-A-Wish Foundation is seeking volunteers from Baltimore and surrounding areas to serve as Wish Granters, volunteers who work directly with children to make wishes come true. A special training session is necessary. Info: 410-484-1232 or Lkadish@midatlanticwish.org.

Bay Bridge Breathers, for people with emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary fibrosis, is offered on the second Monday of the month at noon in the LifeResource Center Auditorium.

Harbor Hikers does daily on-your-own walking from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Center in Glen Burnie for people in search of heart-healthy exercise. Free blood pressure screenings on the first and third Thursday of each month from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Marley Milers does daily on-your-own walking, 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at Marley Station Mall. Free blood pressure screenings the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 8 to 10 a.m.

Donating a Vehicle? The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration has released a list of charities licensed as wholesalers, meaning that they can legally accept the gift of a car, van or truck. The list is available at http://www.marylandmva.com. The MVA also has a booklet, “How to Properly Buy, Sell or Donate a Vehicle,” with instructions on how to complete the donation. Pet Owners: Baltimore City requires dogs and cats to have current rabies vaccinations and have City licenses. Avoid fines by bringing pets to the Rabies Prevention Clinic the first Saturday of each month at the Municipal Animal Shelter, 301 Stockholm Street, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Dogs, cats and ferrets can be brought up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations for $6.00 each. Got Preschoolers? MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) invites all mothers with children ages birth through kindergarten to attend its program, presented on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Streetlite Christian Fellowship, 1121 Riverside Avenue, 10 a.m.-noon. Puppy Love: Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), the national non-profit organization that trains assistance dogs (the dogs who accompany individuals with physical or developmental disabilities), is looking for people interested in becoming volunteer puppy raisers. I Quit: The American Lung Association of Maryland offers a free “Quit Kit” for stopping smoking, including a booklet of tips, a summary of nicotine replacement therapies, strategies for weight control, and a list of smoking cessation programs in local communities. Run! The Falls Road Running Store, 1622 Thames Street in Fells Point, offers recreational runs in the area for all paces. There are group runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45 p.m. On Tuesday, runs go through the Inner Harbor, on Thursdays, runs go through Canton and Upper Fells. On Mondays, the Federal Hill Runners have a run that leaves Federal Hill Fitness at 6:30 p.m., These are both recreational and competitive runners and walkers who train and socialize together in the neighborhood. They meet for a run every Monday evening at 6:30 p.m., leaving from Porters, corner of Riverside and Cross. The course caters to a variety of distances and paces. For Kicks: Adults of all skill levels are invited to play community soccer on Saturdays (weather permitting) at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park. Bring a light and dark shirt and water. Details: Chris at 410-539-1922.

Volunteer: The Maryland Science Center is looking for volunteers to serve as bus greeters and information guides during the week and/or weekend. Training is provided. Info: 410-545-5894 or twashington@mdsci.org

Seniors: On Wednesdays, there’s the Variety Seniors Club at Farring-Baybrook Recreation Center, 4501 Farring Court, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Program for ages 50 and up with disabilities who live in the community. The club meets throughout the fall and winter months for table games, arts and crafts and special informative programs related to senior issues and day trips. Limited transportation on a first-come, first-served basis is available for Baltimore residents. The cost is $1 per week. Info: 410-396-1550.

Soccer Stats: Information on games and scheduling, as well as directions, can be obtained by going to the Maryland State Soccer website (www.marylandsoccer.com) and clicking on “Cups and Tournaments.” Results can also be obtained online.

Soup Kitchen: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 7834 Eastern Blvd., Eastpoint, offers a soup kitchen on the last Saturday of every month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, entrance on Bank Street. Info: 410-288-0537.

French? Polish? German? If you speak any of these languages, plus English, the Red Cross needs your skills for its Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center in Baltimore. Time is voluntary and requires about four hours a week, Monday-Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Red Cross headquarters in Northwest Baltimore, although some volunteers work from home. Walk Beyond: A new workout and wellness program for women meets in Patterson Park, at the corner of Eastern and Linwood avenues, rain or shine, running Monday through Thursday, beginning this week, 8 a.m. Child care is not provided, but young children in strollers are welcome. Wheelchair Sports: The Metro Wheelchair Basketball League plays at Farring-Baybrook Recreation Center, 4501 Farring Court, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. There is play every Tuesday in the league, which is open to ages 14 and up, all skill levels. Registration is $10/person. Info: 410-396-7072.

Yoga: Yoga is offered in various locations around the Southeast. On Mondays, an “all levels” yoga class is offered at 6:30 p.m. in the Virginia S. Baker Rec Center in Patterson Park. On Tuesdays at 4:45 p.m., “Easing Into Yoga” classes (for seniors, pregnant women or individuals recovering from an illness) are held at the Hatton Center, Fait and Linwood avenues. “Easing” is followed by a Basics class at 6:15 p.m., and a Continuing class at 7:30 p.m. With all classes except “Easing” (which has a voluntary donation), the first class is free, then $10 per class.
