Good Friday: Friday, March 21 is Good Friday. There will be no pickup of trash, bulk or recyclables that day. Parking meters must be fed and all parking regulations (including residential permit parking) must be observed.
Guide Office: The offices of the Baltimore Guide will be closed on Good Friday. Deadline for Community Calendar items is Thursday at noon.
Mayor’s Night In: There is a Mayor’s Night In on March 19, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Curran Conference Room of City Hall, 100 N. Holliday Street. Mayor Sheila Dixon and city leaders will lead an informative discussion on group homes and supportive housing. Topics will include compliance with FHA and ADA regulations, monitoring and enforcement tools that ensure group homes and supportive housing are in compliance with local and state health, building and housing codes, and opportunities for community involvement.
Fish! The first fishing rodeo of the spring will be held at the Boat Lake in Patterson Park Saturday, March 29, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. All children competing must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. BYO rod; no fishing license required. A few rods and reels will be available to borrow, but don’t count on it. Admission is $1 for everyone. Call 410-396-7078 for info.
Sock Burning: March 19 is the official Burning of the Socks Day in Annapolis, to celebrate the arrival of spring. Come to the Annapolis Maritime Museum at 5:03 p.m. Info: 410-295-0104, annapolisalive.org. The vernal equinox, or official beginning of spring, arrives at 1:48 a.m. on March 20.
All That Jazz: Baltimore’s Cab Calloway and Billie Holiday Vocal Jazz Competitions, and the new Chick Webb Jazz Combo Competition, will be held at Artscape on Sunday, July 20. The competition is open now. Applicants should submit the completed application, a $25 application fee, their resume, and a cassette tape or CD of no more than three of their own renditions of jazz favorites including one song previously recorded by Billie Holiday (for women) and Cab Calloway (for men) by Friday, March 28. Glaucoma Screenings: The city has teamed up with several medical associations and eye professional offices to offer free glaucoma screenings. The next takes place on Monday, March 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Bon Secours Hospital. The 2008 Eyes Have It screening schedule is available at www.fightglaucoma.org. Ag, Ag, Ag: The Maryland Department of Agriculture, 50 Harry S. Truman Pkwy. in Annapolis, holds an open house on Saturday, March 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Free Admission. Visitors can see the department’s insect collection, make slime in the State Chemist’s laboratory, enjoy a Maryland food and craft market, demonstrate their hog calling skills, take in a petting farm, milk a cow, ride a pony, and learn about the world of agriculture today through hands-on activities. Women’s Health: Baltimore City offers free HPV vaccines, to help prevent cervical cancer, to girls and women ages 9-26, through its “Prevention Wednesday” program.
